Scriptural verse

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः ॥

yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ ||

Literal translation

Yoga is the restraint or settling of the modifications of citta.

Vedika source-faithful rendering checked against the Sanskrit text of Patañjali Yoga Sūtra 1.2; key technical terms retained where useful.

Vedika paraphrase

Yoga begins when the movements of citta settle and the mind becomes clear, steady, and inwardly disciplined.

Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. Yoga Sutra 1.2

Vedika commentary

Vedika should distinguish Pātañjala Yoga from a modern reduction of yoga to exercise alone while respecting āsana as part of the wider path.

Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.

Traditional commentary
