தீயினாற் சுட்டபுண் உள்ளாறும் ஆறாதே நாவினாற் சுட்ட வடு.
tīyiṉāṟ cuṭṭa puṇ uḷḷāṟum āṟātē nāviṉāṟ cuṭṭa vaṭu.
“The wound burned by fire heals within; the scar burned by the tongue does not heal.”

Vedika commentary
The couplet uses a forceful contrast: a physical burn may close, while words can remain active in memory and relationship. It is not a clinical claim that verbal wounds literally never heal. Its ethical force lies in irreversibility—we cannot make another person unhear a contemptuous phrase. Restraint therefore belongs before speech, not only in the apology afterward.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
