Scriptural verse

प्रणवो धनुः शरो ह्यात्मा ब्रह्म तल्लक्ष्यमुच्यते । अप्रमत्तेन वेद्धव्यं शरवत्तन्मयो भवेत् ॥ ४ ॥

praṇavo dhanuḥ śaro hy ātmā brahma tal lakṣyam ucyate | apramattena veddhavyaṃ śaravat tanmayo bhavet || 4 ||

Literal translation

Praṇava is the bow, the Self indeed the arrow; Brahman is said to be the target. It is to be pierced by one who is undistracted; like the arrow, one should become of its nature.

Vedika literal rendering, checked against the original text and Śaṅkara-bhāṣya transmission.

Vedika paraphrase

The bow, arrow and target image asks for collected attention: practice steadies the seeker toward direct knowledge of Brahman.

Praṇava is the bow, the Self the arrow and Brahman the target; with undistracted attention, one should become one with the target like the arrow. Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 2.2.4

Vedika commentary

An arrow reaches its mark only when it is prepared, aimed and released without carelessness. The metaphor turns meditation into disciplined orientation. It is not about strain; it is about reducing the scatter that keeps attention from entering deeply into what matters.

Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
