Scriptural verse

सत्यं वद । धर्मं चर । स्वाध्यायान्मा प्रमदः ॥

satyaṃ vada | dharmaṃ cara | svādhyāyān mā pramadaḥ ||

Literal translation

“Speak truth. Practise dharma. Do not be negligent regarding self-study.”

Vedika literal rendering of the opening injunctions of Taittirīya Upaniṣad 1.11.1; svādhyāya retains its Vedic sense of disciplined recitation and study.

Vedika paraphrase

“Integrity needs truthful speech, responsible conduct and continued learning.”

Taittirīya Upaniṣad 1.11.1 (opening injunctions)

Vedika commentary

Truth without conduct can become performance; conduct without study can harden into habit; study without truth can become display. The three disciplines keep correcting one another.

Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
