धर्मः स्वनुष्ठितः पुंसां विष्वक्सेनकथासु यः । नोत्पादयेद्यदि रतिं श्रम एव हि केवलम् ॥ ८ ॥
dharmaḥ sv-anuṣṭhitaḥ puṃsāṃ viṣvaksena-kathāsu yaḥ | notpādayed yadi ratiṃ śrama eva hi kevalam || 8 ||
“The dharma properly performed by people, if it does not produce loving attraction for the accounts of Viṣvaksena, is only labour.”
Vedika close rendering checked against the Sanskrit text and Vaiṣṇava translations; Viṣvaksena is retained as a divine name rather than secularised.
“A completed obligation may still be spiritually empty if it never turns attention and affection toward Bhagavān.”
Śrīmad Bhāgavata Purāṇa 1.2.8
Vedika commentary
Duty can become a machine for producing identity, status or exhaustion. The verse introduces a devotional test: what kind of attraction is this disciplined life cultivating? Within the Bhāgavata, the answer is not generic satisfaction but growing taste for hearing and remembering Bhagavān.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
