“Vedika interpretation: Devotion is measured less by social importance than by sincerity.”
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Araṇya Kāṇḍa 74
Vedika commentary
Sincerity appears in attention and hospitality, not in public importance. This reflection follows Vālmīki's account of an accomplished ascetic; it does not import the tasted-berries motif from later popular retellings.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
