Ahalyā is the wife of the sage Gautama, and her empty hermitage lies on the princes' road to Mithilā. Rāma asks about it, and Viśvāmitra tells her story: Indra came to her in Gautama's form, and she knew him and consented. Gautama cursed her to live unseen, and Rāma's arrival ends the penance. Gautama takes her back.
