Son of Vāyu, minister of Sugrīva. Jāmbavān has to remind him of his own strength before the leap.

Hanumān meets Rāma at Ṛṣyamūka and speaks so well that Rāma remarks on it to Lakṣmaṇa. As Sugrīva's minister he becomes the go-between of the story: he crosses the sea, finds Sītā, brings her message back and later carries news of Rāma's return to Bharata. Devotional tradition later made him a god of service.
