Kausalyā is the senior queen of Ayodhyā and mother of Rāma. Vālmīki lets her speak plainly about her own neglect in the palace and her fear for her son. Her fortunes change within a day: her son is to be crowned, and then he is leaving for the forest. When the fourteen years end, she is among the queens Rāma greets on his return.
