Lakṣmaṇa
Son of Sumitrā, Rāma's shadow. There is no Lakṣmaṇa-rekhā in Vālmīki. The line drawn round Sītā's hut comes from later retellings.

Lakṣmaṇa is Rāma's younger brother, and Vālmīki says he was attached to him from boyhood. When the exile is announced he answers with anger, and Rāma has to talk him round. He has a temper, and a loyalty that argues as well as obeys.
