Lava and Kuśa are born in Vālmīki's hermitage after Rāma has sent Sītā away, and the sage raises and teaches them. At the aśvamedha in Uttara Kāṇḍa they sing the Rāmāyaṇa before Rāma, the sages and the kings. Bāla and Uttara Kāṇḍa are often treated as later additions, and this frame belongs to both.
