Nala is a vānara engineer, the son of the divine architect Viśvakarmā, and the one person Samudra says can build across the water. Rāma, stranded at the shore, has to be told this by the ocean itself. Nala directs the army, who bring stones and trees, and the bridge is finished in five days.
