Sumitrā is the third of Daśaratha's chief queens, usually seen in the shadow of Kausalyā and Kaikeyī. When Lakṣmaṇa comes to say goodbye before following Rāma into exile, she sends him with a blessing and no protest. After Rāma leaves, she steadies Kausalyā in her grief.
