Vāli is Aṅgada's father and Sugrīva's elder brother. Rāma kills him to keep his pact with Sugrīva. In sarga 17 Vāli speaks against it, and in sarga 18 Rāma replies, before Vāli dies. The exchange runs to two full sargas, and readers have argued about it ever since.
