WHY OSHO MATTERS
Meditation for a restless modern person
Osho belongs in a modern archive with context intact. His experiments in active meditation and his vast body of talks remain influential; the history of the movement around him also includes authority, conflict, criminal acts by senior commune members, and competing accounts that cannot be collapsed into either devotion or dismissal.
LIFE & HISTORICAL RECORD
Meditation for a restless modern person
Born Chandra Mohan Jain in 1931 and known successively as Acharya Rajneesh, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, and Osho, he became one of the twentieth century’s most widely circulated Indian spiritual speakers.
His teaching style moved rapidly across Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sufi, Daoist, Christian, and Western philosophical sources. Rather than present a single inherited commentary tradition, he used these sources as occasions to provoke attention, doubt, laughter, and experiment.
From philosophy lecturer to global movement
Osho studied philosophy, taught at university, and left academic employment in 1966 to lecture and lead meditation camps. A centre established in Pune in 1974 attracted an international community and developed a distinctive combination of meditation and encounter-oriented therapy.
What the record leaves open
The movement relocated to Oregon in 1981 and built Rajneeshpuram. Conflict with local residents and authorities escalated. Senior commune members later pleaded guilty to serious crimes, including the 1984 salmonella attack; Osho denied directing those crimes. He pleaded guilty to immigration charges in 1985, left the United States, returned to India in 1986, and died in Pune in 1990.
CORE TEACHINGS
Three threads to carry with you
Witnessing
Notice sensation, thought, emotion, and action without reducing awareness to any one of them.
Active meditation
Use structured movement, breath, sound, and stillness to meet a restless nervous system.
Experiment
Treat a method as something to test in experience, not as an identity to defend.
WORKS & PRACTICES
An oral archive and a family of active methods
Most books published under Osho’s name are edited transcripts of recorded talks rather than books composed as manuscripts. The archive spans thousands of talks delivered in Hindi and English, with publication histories that require edition-level care. Dynamic Meditation, Kundalini Meditation, and other active formats are central movement practices. Their sequences are documented by Osho organizations; claims about universal psychological or medical benefit should be evaluated separately from their value as spiritual exercises.
Dynamic Meditation
A staged morning practice combining rapid breathing, cathartic expression, movement, stillness, and celebration.
Kundalini Meditation
An evening sequence of shaking, dancing, sitting, and lying in stillness.
Discourse archive
Talks on meditation and on Indian and global wisdom traditions, published in many edited series.
RELEVANCE TODAY
Read the teaching and the institution together
Osho’s influence continues through meditation centres, recordings, translations, and a vocabulary of embodied awareness that has entered global wellness culture. For many practitioners, the active methods remain an accessible doorway into stillness. Responsible study also keeps institutional power in view. The Oregon period is not a detachable footnote, and the crimes of senior movement members should not be blurred into vague “controversy.” At the same time, historical accountability does not require pretending that every practitioner’s experience or every recorded teaching is identical to those acts.
