Carnatic pedagogy commonly associates him with sarali varisai and other graded exercises, though the historical development of the system is more complex than the work of one person alone.

Why he matters now
Purandara Dasa matters because he refuses to separate artistic excellence from ethical formation. A beautiful voice cannot compensate for greed or contempt.
