Scriptural verse

उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् । आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः ॥

uddhared ātmanātmānaṃ nātmānam avasādayet | ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ ||

Literal translation

One should uplift oneself by oneself; one should not lower oneself. For the self alone is the friend of oneself, and the self alone is the enemy of oneself.

Vedika source-faithful rendering checked against Bhagavad Gita 6.5 Sanskrit; not a quoted published translation.

Vedika paraphrase

The Gita places responsibility in the seeker's hands: disciplined mind as friend, undisciplined mind as obstacle.

Let a person uplift oneself by oneself. Bhagavad Gita 6.5

Vedika commentary

Vedika should present this as sober empowerment, not harsh self-blame. The verse calls for responsibility joined with practice.

Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.

Source

Let a person uplift oneself by oneself. Bhagavad Gita 6.5

Traditional commentary

Traditional Gītā commentary reads this as a teaching on self-mastery: the disciplined mind supports liberation, while the undisciplined mind binds the seeker.
