आत्मानं रथिनं विद्धि शरीरं रथमेव तु । बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रग्रहम् एव च ॥
ātmānaṃ rathinaṃ viddhi śarīraṃ ratham eva tu | buddhiṃ tu sārathiṃ viddhi manaḥ pragraham eva ca ||

Vedika commentary
The image does not condemn the body or mind. A chariot is valuable when its parts work together. The body carries, the mind connects impulse and direction, and buddhi discerns the road. The teaching asks who is being served by this movement. Inner discipline is coordination: discernment steadies the reins so that life is not driven only by habit or appetite.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
