प्रणवो धनुः शरो ह्यात्मा ब्रह्म तल्लक्ष्यमुच्यते । अप्रमत्तेन वेद्धव्यं शरवत्तन्मयो भवेत् ॥
praṇavo dhanuḥ śaro hy ātmā brahma tal lakṣyam ucyate | apramattena veddhavyaṃ śaravat tanmayo bhavet ||
“Praṇava is the bow; the self is the arrow; Brahman is called its target. It is to be pierced by one who is vigilant; one should become of its nature, like the arrow.”
Vedika literal rendering, checked against Śaṅkara-bhāṣya translations
“The Upaniṣad turns contemplation into an image of disciplined aim: Om gathers attention, the self is directed, and Brahman—not ordinary achievement—is the goal.”
Praṇava is the bow, the self is indeed the arrow, and Brahman is said to be its target. It is to be penetrated with vigilance; one should become one with it, as the arrow with the target. Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 2.2.4
Vedika commentary
The verse is not a productivity slogan. It asks for apramāda—careful, undistracted vigilance—in a spiritual practice whose aim is knowledge of Brahman.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
