Scriptural verse

वितर्कबाधने प्रतिपक्षभावनम् ॥

vitarka-bādhane pratipakṣa-bhāvanam ||

Literal translation

When disturbed by contrary reasoning or harmful thought, there is cultivation of the opposite.

Vedika literal rendering, checked against the Sanskrit text and classical Yoga context

Vedika paraphrase

When a harmful line of thought gathers force, Yoga recommends more than arguing with it: deliberately strengthen the ethical understanding and action that move in the other direction.

When obstructed by contrary thoughts, cultivate their opposite. Patañjali Yoga Sūtra 2.33

Vedika commentary

Pratipakṣa-bhāvana is not pretending that pain or danger does not exist. It is training the mind so that anger, greed or harmful justification does not automatically decide the next action.

Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
