Scriptural verse

मुक्तिमिच्छसि चेत्तात विषयान् विषवत्त्यज । क्षमार्जवदयातोषसत्यं पीयूषवद् भज ॥

muktim icchasi cet tāta viṣayān viṣavat tyaja | kṣamārjava-dayā-toṣa-satyaṃ pīyūṣavad bhaja ||

Literal translation

If you desire liberation, dear one, abandon sense objects like poison; cultivate forgiveness, straightforwardness, compassion, contentment and truth like nectar.

Vedika literal rendering, checked against the Sanskrit text

Vedika paraphrase

Aṣṭāvakra pairs a radical warning about sense-bound craving with a positive discipline: cultivate the virtues that make freedom livable.

If you desire liberation, my child, abandon sense objects as poison, and cherish forgiveness, sincerity, compassion, contentment and truth as nectar. Aṣṭāvakra Gītā 1.2

Vedika commentary

The verse asks us to notice when attraction becomes bondage—when a desire behaves like a command. Its answer is not emptiness alone, but the active nourishment of truth, contentment, compassion, sincerity and forgiveness.

Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
