उत्तिष्ठत जाग्रत प्राप्य वरान्निबोधत । क्षुरस्य धारा निशिता दुरत्यया दुर्गं पथस्तत्कवयो वदन्ति ॥ १४ ॥
uttiṣṭhata jāgrata prāpya varān nibodhata | kṣurasya dhārā niśitā duratyayā durgaṃ pathas tat kavayo vadanti || 14 ||
“Arise; awake. Having reached the excellent ones, understand. The sharpened edge of a razor is hard to cross; the wise say that path is difficult.”
Vedika literal rendering checked against the Sanskrit text and Śaṅkara-bhāṣya presentation; varān is read as excellent or wise teachers, not as rewards.
“Spiritual urgency is paired with humility: wakefulness means recognising when a demanding path requires trustworthy instruction.”

Vedika commentary
Motivation alone can become noise. The verse adds two disciplines: learn from those who have genuinely travelled the path, and respect the precision the path requires. A capable guide should deepen discernment rather than demand the surrender of it.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
