“Clarity of mind comes from cultivating friendliness, compassion, appreciative joy and equanimity toward happiness, suffering, virtue and non-virtue respectively.”
Vedika literal rendering checked against the Sanskrit sūtra and classical commentary; upekṣā is rendered as equanimity rather than careless indifference.
“Not every encounter needs the same emotion: friendliness, compassion, appreciative joy and equanimity each answer a different condition.”

Vedika commentary
A single emotional habit cannot meet every situation well. Another’s happiness needs goodwill rather than comparison; suffering needs compassion; virtue needs delight rather than rivalry; harmful conduct needs steadiness that does not feed reactivity.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
