यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जनः । स यत्प्रमाणं कुरुते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते ॥ ३.२१ ॥

“Whatever an exemplary person practises, other people do that very thing. Whatever standard that person sets, the world follows.”
Vedika literal rendering checked against the Sanskrit text and Gītā commentaries; śreṣṭha is treated as exemplary or influential, not inherently morally superior.
“Anyone whose behaviour is watched carries responsibility: visible conduct quietly teaches what a group will accept and repeat.”
Bhagavad Gītā 3.21
Vedika commentary
People learn norms by watching what influential figures repeatedly do, especially when words and behaviour conflict. The verse shifts leadership from self-image to consequence: your conduct can normalise care, courage and discipline—or their opposites.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
