“Air is the Guru, water the father, earth the great mother; day and night are the two nurses, and the whole world plays within their care.”
Vedika close rendering checked against the Gurmukhī text and Sikh translations; transliteration follows a readable Indic scholarly scheme.
“Guru Nānak places human life inside a household of elemental teachers and caregivers, replacing entitlement with kinship, gratitude and accountability.”
Guru Granth Sahib, Japjī Sāhib, final salok, Ang 8
Vedika commentary
Air, water and earth are not background scenery. They sustain every breath, meal and body before personal achievement begins. Familial and teacherly language makes dependence intimate: care received creates responsibility for how shared supports are treated.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
