वितर्कबाधने प्रतिपक्षभावनम् ॥ २.३३ ॥
vitarka-bādhane pratipakṣa-bhāvanam || 2.33 ||
“When afflicted by harmful or contrary thoughts, cultivate the opposite.”
Vedika literal rendering; checked against the Sanskrit and classical Yoga commentarial context.
“When a harmful thought-pattern takes hold, Yoga prescribes deliberate cultivation of its contrary—not passive guilt.”
Patañjali Yoga Sūtra 2.33
Vedika commentary
A habit weakens more reliably when we practise a concrete alternative. The opposite of cruelty may be protection; the opposite of deceit, one truthful sentence; the opposite of grasping, a bounded act of release.
Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
