Vedika paraphrase

“Vedika interpretation: The hardest kingdom to govern may be oneself.”

Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Yuddha Kāṇḍa 111.18

Vedika commentary

External power does not guarantee self-government. Vedika's reflection concerns desire and restraint; the epic's account of Rāvaṇa should not be reduced to a universal psychological diagnosis or a new invented list of ten vices.

Vedika distinguishes the original Sanskrit, a literal rendering, and an interpretive paraphrase so that the words of the text are never confused with explanation.
