Jaimini is the traditional author of the Mimamsa Sutra, the foundational aphoristic text of Purva Mimamsa. His historical life is obscure, but the work attached to his name shaped Indian reflection on dharma, language, interpretation and the authority of Vedic injunctions.

Mimamsa begins from a demanding problem: if dharma cannot always be known by perception or ordinary inference, how should Vedic statements be interpreted as reliable guidance for action?
Jaimini’s sutras are compact and presuppose debate. Their importance lies not only in ritual conclusions but in a sophisticated discipline of reading—context, sentence unity, exception, conflict and purpose all matter.
A founder known through a text
Tradition places Jaimini among the pupils of Veda Vyasa and attributes other works to him. These lineage accounts are important but do not provide a securely dated biography.
What the record leaves open
The Mimamsa Sutra itself is the firmer historical object, though its exact date and textual formation remain debated. Later commentators, especially Sabara, Kumarila and Prabhakara, made the school’s arguments more explicit and sometimes developed different positions.

For early Mimamsa, dharma is known through Vedic command. The interpreter must determine what an injunction asks, who is qualified, what supporting acts belong to it and how apparently conflicting passages fit together.
The school’s defence of the Veda as authorless and intrinsically valid is developed fully across later Mimamsa. Vedika distinguishes that mature tradition from claims that can be assigned directly to every terse sutra.

The Mimamsa Sutra and its commentarial life
The Mimamsa Sutra is Jaimini’s central attributed work. Other texts bearing his name belong to complex traditions and cannot automatically be treated as works by the same author. Its living practice is careful interpretation. Even outside ritual, Mimamsa warns against extracting one sentence from a system of language and calling that extraction faithful reading.

Why he matters now
Jaimini matters in a culture of fragments, screenshots and decontextualised quotations. His tradition insists that responsible meaning requires method. He also expands Vedika’s picture of spirituality. Not every rishi teaches through ecstasy or silence; some preserve dharma by asking exacting questions about language and obligation.
