Shankara’s Advaita and Ramanuja’s Vishishtadvaita share a scriptural world but create very different relationships between unity, difference and devotion.
Teacher of a living tradition
The historical Ramanuja stands in the Sri Vaishnava lineage, connected with temple culture, Sanskrit commentary and Tamil devotional inheritance. His dates are disputed: Sri Vaishnava tradition places his life in 1017–1137, while some modern scholarship proposes roughly 1077–1157. Traditional biographies add rich narrative detail that must be distinguished from secure historical claims.
